EDITOR'S NOTES | Issue 4-16
publication date: Apr 16, 2006
Another year’s tax deadline has come and gone so it seems appropriate to begin and end this week’s issue with tax cases. When a company doesn’t pay franchise taxes, it loses more than its right to sue. It cannot defend itself against a suit; nor can its insurer, unless the insurer officially signs on as an intervener.
This issue also delves into statute of limitations issues, a jury that got a little too carried away with its award, and a state high court’s take on a no-exceptions rule in bidding regulations.
And finally, our concluding news item in Briefly Noted is another case in point on the hotly debated issue of illegal immigration. No matter which side of the fence you’re on in the debate, it’s best to play by the rules. One employer faces 14 felony counts for hiring undocumented workers and failing to pay the employer taxes.
