LEGAL COSTS AND MYSTERY SMELL PLAGUE LAS VEGAS JUSTICE CENTER
A mysterious stench and non-functioning elevators arent the only problems plaguing the Las Vegas Regional Justice Center. The $185 million project that ran over time by three and a half years and over budget by an estimated $15 million is also mired in legal problems. The Clark County district attorneys office is now recommending that the county pay the law firm of Rooker Rawlins LLP as much as $15 million for assorted legal services related to ongoing arbitration between the county and AF Construction Co., Inc. That number comes on top of the $70 million that AF Construction is claiming against the county for unpaid work. The county is countering that the contractor owes $50 million for damages caused by its tardy completion, shoddy workmanship and failure to follow building plans.
AF Construction and Clark County have been at odds on this and other projects in the recent past. In 2005, the county alleged that the contractor submitted false claims and inflated billings for its work on the neighboring detention center.
